As Washington State begins developing a charter school program on a statewide level over the next several years, alternative education has become a much larger and more publically discussed issue. The Middle College program in Seattle has been around for over a decade; in the past, this program was highly successful at providing an opportunity for at-risk youth to experience genuine success in both school and society. I recently joined the Middle College High School at Seattle University and have been actively working to develop an effective teacher-lead model to boost this small alternative program. In collaboration with Teachers United, Seattle Public Schools, Seattle University’s MIT program and Educational Leadership program I am beginning the work around developing a team of teacher leaders who are working to support the various traditional, alternative, and charter programs that are emerging in Seattle’s ever-changing schools.
