OKMath/OKSci Leadership

OKMath/OKSci Leadership selects, challenges, develops and educates Oklahoma math and science educators who have demonstrated an interest in leadership skills related to mathematics and science education. In April 2014, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) featured OKMath/OKSci Leadership as one of only three state-led innovative STEM programs (http://youtu.be/7VQsHa3rmh4). Several members of the Beta Class ...more »

Engines of Change: NBCT State and National Professional Learning Teams

Let's elevate the role of NBCTs by creating professional learning teams in every state. NBCTs would work with state departments of education, the U.S. Department of Education, and other organizations to design and deliver professional growth initiatives for teachers in their state. NBCT teams, called Engines of Change, would consult with counties, districts, and school sites to support professional learning in America's ...more »

Using Peer Observers to Support Educator Effectiveness and Leadership

Educator to Educator feedback on teaching and learning is an effective tool for increasing educator effectiveness, for both the peer educator and observed educator, and supports educator leadership through the identification of peer educators. Our idea supports the use of peer educators, as Qualified Peer Observers (QPOs), to provide feedback to our educators who are on peer observation portion of a two year educator ...more »

Global Connections: University and Public School Partnerships

Public schools are always in need of resources due to funding limitations. Massachusetts is a center of higher education institutions. Why can't public schools and Massachusetts higher education institutions work together to enrich the experience of students in our classrooms? Salem State University is now home for the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Dr. Christopher Mauriello is the Center's director and ...more »

Professional Learning On Demand

Professional Learning needs to be teacher driven and focused on student achievement. It needs to be accessible 24/7 and have methods for authentic collaboration and sharing of effective instructional practice. On a small scale I've done this with a website containing a wealth of videos called Classrooms in Focus & Coach's Cuts. These videos expose teachers to effective practice with our own students using our own materials ...more »

Collaborative Curriculum Team Building

My district, like so many others, is changing our entire curriculum pre-K to 6th grade. I am currently set to pilot a new math program along with two teachers from each grade level. A different program is set to be piloted by 6 teachers for each grade level. Little to no training has been scheduled. I will create a virtual platform space where vertical articulation can occur across the grade levels to better assist the ...more »

Innercollegiate Public School Programming

There is a need to fill a void between high school and secondary education. Public education, while effective, does not meet the need nor the aptitude of what many colleges and future businesses look for in high school graduates. While there are many high schools that offer AP or dual enrollment opportunities for students who are currently in high school, the promise and follow-up of those selected students to follow ...more »

Teach Educators Leadership Skills

I don't think educators typically have leadership skills. They need to learn how to think and act strategically when it comes to new ideas, changing practice, and learning together. There is lots of research available in this regard and if teachers learn how to advocate and lead, they not only will impact schools with greater skill, but they will also model these leadership skills for the students they teach.

Making Time to Learn by Observing Others

Since we were small, we have been learning new behaviors through the practice of observation. It's no surprise, then, that most teachers will adopt those practices that they experienced while they themselves were a student. The question to think about though, it whether those teaching practices we remember from our 7th grade Science class years ago are still applicable and meaningful today. It is important for us as ...more »
