Harnessing Edu-Power! – Creating Teacher Leaders & Creating 21st Century School Spaces

My colleagues and I helped create, develop, and transform our current blended learning school program - Washtenaw Alliance for Virtual Education. In it, teachers have a three-pronged role of instructor, advisor, and chief architects of our program & learning models. In our primary role, we use curricular knowledge & assessment literacy training to collaboratively break down standards into targeted learning benchmarks. ...more »

Student-Centered Literacy Instruction

Allegan Area ESA is leading our county districts toward a student-centered literacy model for reading and writing instruction. Michigan teachers have written a CCSS aligned model for reading and writing instruction (MAISA Units of Study, K-12) using the workshop model. This is the beginning of great instruction, but teachers need a model of what this instruction looks like in a real classroom. I would like to develop ...more »

Using iPads to increase Higher Level Thinking Skills

I have been in charge of piloting five iPads in my resource room setting for the past three years. Due to the testing scores my students received, my principal bought 40 more iPads. I have spent numerous hours independently investigating ways to best use iPads at the elementary level to reach the top of Blooms Taxonomy. As my iPad use has expanded so have my views on how to use iPads as tools towards higher level thinking, ...more »

As teachers we are allowed sick days, personal days, professional development days and bereavement days. I would like to see school districts add Teacher Leadership Days that would be available to teachers. A STRATEGIC AGENDA

A STRATEGIC AGENDA Based on the input so far, a strategic agenda slowly but surely fills with the following points: 1. Bridging the gap between management and the base. Management and "the trenches" should be connected (role reversal, hybrid roles, distributed leadership, change agency). 2. Approaching teachers and school staff in a holistic way: have an eye for the professional, but also for the person behind the professional. ...more »

Supporting Teacher Success

In many classrooms, especially in low-income schools, we see dedicated teachers whose students are not making expected progress. These teachers often receive pressure and attack from other teachers, parents, and administrators. This pressure, intended to motivate, increases stress and anxiety for struggling teachers and is counterproductive. Building a professional community beyond the school increases confidence and ...more »

Education Policy and Advocacy Summer Boot Camps (Digital and In Person)

I believe all teachers should receive information on education policy and teacher advocacy. In the current system, teachers are far too removed from policy decisions that affect so much of what we do in our classrooms. I conceptualize the boot camps to occur throughout the US, much like the EdCamp model. A cohort of individuals would put together the Boot Camp content--a living, digital work-- and provide virtual and ...more »
