We are the second largest district in the state of Illinois. We have very few (less than five) teacher leader positions in the district. My school is beginning the process of teachers volunteering their time to peer coach, peer review, and help develop sound teaching. It's an exercise in trust and community.

Teachers in rural community schools often do not have adequate funding for professional development to support student learning. National Board Certification empowers teachers by helping them to grow as leaders within their school, district, and state and also helps them to maintain focus on the heart of their classroom--enhanced student learning. It is a most rigorous, personal professional development process.
The literacy approach exemplifies teaching excellence with five certified teachers, five educational assistants, a literacy specialist and 110 students. I would like to start up a 'Teacher Academy' for Professional Development (PD) within my school district. I believe that we can all agree that PD has not been well received uniformly across all schools. While some schools/districts do things well, we can all do PD better. Race to the top money is given to schools trying to "catch up" technologically across the nation. If schools choose this, they get the money and must abide by the stipulations that come with it. I'd like to see a federally funded project in which teachers seeking national board certification, can partner with a mentoring program, facilitated by national board certified teachers, to assist them in the process. Supporting and creating opportunities for teacher-driven learning are critical to both the profession and student learning. What if there was a way to provide all educators with the tools they'd need to run an Edcamp in their district? Edcamps are the most popular form of teacher-led professional development across the country.
I hope to differentiate professional development for my staff based on their individualized needs. By helping teachers to reflect on personal areas of growth and strength, I hope to increase teacher effectiveness and in return improve student achievement.
I think that so many educators are coming in from different fields, and we are also seeing a decline in student teaching from traditional education programs. Student teaching needs to be funded and mandatory. Perhaps the reason we are losing most of our new educators is because of a lack of support and mentoring. The current path for teacher certification is outdated and ineffective in preparing potential teachers. I purpose a path closer to the preparation of physicians. The first two years students will take classes in child development and brain research. Frustrated with the proliferation of instructional "coaches," especially in urban areas and in many conversion charter schools wherein faculty were novice and alternatively certified, we pursued grant money to develop an add-o coaching certificate with the state DOE.
Teachers used to know their students on a deep level. We need to empower teachers to know and understand their students. Knowing their students will help individual teachers own and understand the data their students provide. Teachers should own and analyze the data for their own students. Teachers should be expected to implement change to help all students become successful, functioning members of society.
A professional learning team centered around better retaining, supporting, and accelerating beginning teachers in the areas of professional development, cross-curricular collaboration, and educator activism. The problem with the dropout rate with teachers is probably attributable to the lack of qualified mentors for teachers. As we know all too well, it was estimated about one or two years ago that there's a 2.5 million person shortage in the teaching profession in America.That's a whole lot of people. Principals, central office admin, consultants, and state ed departments would be required to teach just one prep or class for a 3-6 month period at least once every two years. The teacher in which they are 'subbing' for would then be released during that time to participate in some of the leadership responsibilities of the person assuming their role as teacher.
