Supporting Teacher Leadership, Engaging Math Change with Engineering

Principals should support teacher leaders in building partnerships beyond the school. As advisor to my school’s junior chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, I sought to provide students on our math team with more opportunities to compete. We hosted a one-time math quiz bowl in Philadelphia for teams of students from eight other public high schools. The event catalyzed a partnership with the Philadelphia ...more »

Distributed Leadership Teams in Schools

Schools and districts need to find better ways to increase teacher motivation, retain highly-skilled teachers and increase student achievement. Creating distributed leadership teams within schools may be one way to do that. These teams would transcend your grandmother’s “committee”—instead, distributed leadership teams would have actual decision-making authority. Districts and schools would have to be willing to give ...more »

Using Our Resources to Create a Coaching Team

Our school currently has a team of 8 amazing individuals who can serve as instructional coaches to help teachers in the building. This coaching team will spearhead the 2nd and 3rd Year Coaching Program. In this program, each teacher in their 2nd and 3rd year (1st year teachers receive a coach through the county), will receive an instructional coach that will meet with them once per month to help them perfect their ...more »

Teacher Leader "Boot Camp"

"Teacher leadership" is a popular notion these days; everyone seems to agree that it is vital to school success - so much so, in fact, that some states even offer it as an "add on" endorsement to a license! For the most part, though, teachers interested in becoming teacher leaders either have to be identified by traditional school leaders (like the principal) or enroll in a formal teacher education program. But wouldn't ...more »

Creating Interschool PLC's for "single teacher" subjects like physics

As a physics teacher, I spend too many PLC days joining another group because I'm the only physics teacher in the school. A better use of my time, I believe, would be to meet with other physics teachers in an interschool PLC setting.

It seems like a simple idea but we are not doing it in our district. Suggestions from those who have implemented a cross school PLC?

Teacher Leader Certification Academy

In Riverside, CA, at the Riverside County Office of Education, we have a program called the Teacher Leader Certification Academy. This is a two-year academy designed for teachers who already serve as leaders, either formally or informally, but would like training in leadership and, specifically, in what teacher leaders do. We use the Teacher Leader Model Standards and Kouzes' & Posner's Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership ...more »

Paid Residency program

Just as Doctors have restored their profession, we as teachers need to "take a page from their book". Doctors go through paid residency programs (the bill is paid through public funds... medicare) where they are mentored and paid as they learn. Teachers are expected to do this in a few unpaid months. In fact, many states allow a college degree (in anything) to convert into a classroom teacher with no hands on experience ...more »

Teacher evaluations

teachers should be evaluated by other master teachers not administrators. Many administrators have been out of the classroom for too long. Their input and suggestions are not as relevant or meaningful as a teacher who is current in her practice and effective. Peer review provides A less threatening method of evaluation. I believe it could lead to better instruction and more effective teachers!

School Teachers Collaborating with Afterschool and Summer Program Professionals

Especially in urban and lower-income communities, the majority of children go from school to an afterschool program each day during the school year. Many of these children go to summer programs when school is out for the summer. Cross-training, shared learning goals, and stronger communication and collaboration between school teachers and the staff working in afterschool and summer programs could be a huge benefit to ...more »
