Teacher Leadership to Shift the K-12 School Calendar Year Mindset

More and more, teachers nationwide are saying that student learning, not vacation schedules, should drive the K-12 school calendar year framework. Teacher leaders will confront tradition and understand well that the traditional school calendar year is inefficient, ineffective, and unfair when it comes to 21st learning, teaching, professional planning, partnering with parents/community, and play. They will advocate for ...more »

Computer Science in Middle School

Computer Science education is an important challenge for school systems nationwide. CS and Electronics are neglected areas in all grade levels, with some statistics showing as many as 90% of schools offer no computer science. This would be unacceptable with any other science discipline, and computer science is a field with tremendous opportunity and job growth. Research shows women and minorities especially respond to ...more »

Teaching is About Connoisseurship, Love, and Service. Although it would be much simpler if it was not.

Expertise with a purpose, love for others (without condition), and providing opportunities for young people to reach their potential is the foundation of everything we do. Whether we admit it or not; this is also why we choose a path in education. It is easy to be distracted and moved by the jargon of the day: school choice, pay for performance, and the nod toward both the rationale and the practical. The truth is: ...more »

Cultivating Quality Teachers: The Problems of Practice (POP) Fellowship

Many successful, experienced teachers love teaching but also look for opportunities for leadership outside the classroom that allow them to keep teaching. They are problem-solvers who think critically about what they don’t know and how that affects their practice. These teachers want to lead and share their inquiry with their colleagues, but do not want to become administrators. What if these teachers had the opportunity ...more »

Public Education is under attack. Outside of education organizations are increasingly blaming teachers for underperforming schools. These organizations seek solutions outside of our current public education system creating the illusion that transformational change cannot occur within the system. There is too much at stake to allow this perception to continue. Teacher Leaders are not only helpful but critical in creating ...more »

Teachers and Students Leading Change in a Global Society: Solving Global Challenges Through Problem & Project Based Learning

In education we constantly remind ourselves that we are helping to shape the future, which of course we are, but sometimes we need to focus more on shaping the present. There are so many global challenges facing our world today that desperately need solutions, but that seem far too daunting to bring into the classroom, let alone take on as projects. As teachers we sometimes underestimate not only our student's ability ...more »
