What will you do to advance teacher leadership this school year?

Principals and Central Admin Teach Every Two Years

Principals, central office admin, consultants, and state ed departments would be required to teach just one prep or class for a 3-6 month period at least once every two years. The teacher in which they are 'subbing' for would then be released during that time to participate in some of the leadership responsibilities of the person assuming their role as teacher. Or they could use their release time to coach a colleague ...more »

Student Teaching

I think that so many educators are coming in from different fields, and we are also seeing a decline in student teaching from traditional education programs. Student teaching needs to be funded and mandatory. Perhaps the reason we are losing most of our new educators is because of a lack of support and mentoring. Teachers should get to work with a mentor teacher in the classroom for maybe an entire year. BUT GET PAID. ...more »

National Board Certification in Rural Areas

Teachers in rural community schools often do not have adequate funding for professional development to support student learning. National Board Certification empowers teachers by helping them to grow as leaders within their school, district, and state and also helps them to maintain focus on the heart of their classroom--enhanced student learning. It is a most rigorous, personal professional development process.

Redefine Professional Development

I would like to start up a 'Teacher Academy' for Professional Development (PD) within my school district. I believe that we can all agree that PD has not been well received uniformly across all schools. While some schools/districts do things well, we can all do PD better. Teacher Academy Bullet Points *Leverage local universities or an on-line university to offer graduate credit for PD. *Tracks for specific strands (CCSS, ...more »

Edcamp in a Box

Supporting and creating opportunities for teacher-driven learning are critical to both the profession and student learning. What if there was a way to provide all educators with the tools they'd need to run an Edcamp in their district? Edcamps are the most popular form of teacher-led professional development across the country.

Let's Shift Our Focus From Student Test Scores to the Act of Teaching!

We propose a shift. School improvement efforts across the country are focusing on teacher evaluation, new student standards, and improved student assessment systems. We agree that each of these taken together has the possibility to improve schools. Their potential impact, however, is diminished greatly in the absence of work to also support concentrated teacher learning. We propose a shift from primarily examining student ...more »

Teacher Career Ladder

There is very little to no career ladder for teachers other than entry into administration. Pay increases in many, if not most districts, are still based on an antiquated model of pay increase by years of experience. While experience should certainly be a factor, measuring it by the years that a teacher spends in the classroom is not the most effective manner of doing so. We need a system where teachers enter the profession ...more »

Teach Like Me

Schools across the country are adversely affected by teacher shortages . In response, I have created the Teach Like Me Campaign. The Teach Like Me Campaign's main goal is to improve teacher recruitment and retention by redefining public perceptions of the teaching profession. We will accomplish this with three main components: First, we encourage teachers to speak more positively about our profession. We ask teachers ...more »

Hybrid Teacher Leadership Role

Hybrid teaching positions retain effective teachers in classroom positions, while providing them leadership opportunities, and keeping them from succumbing to burnout in high-poverty situations. When teachers leaders leave the classroom they sometimes lose the immediate teacher perspective, as well as credibility among teachers who are "in the trenches." Hybrid teachers retain their teacher perspective and can advocate ...more »

Teacher Led Professional Development

Our proposal is to lead a movement to transform the way professional development is designed and implemented in education. Education is one of the only fields that relies on outside sources to develop the capacities and competencies of teachers. We spend billions on PD with little impact on outcomes. Our approach is three-fold: 1) to build capacity among teachers. to this end we just unveiled a web site that can guide ...more »
