Retaining teachers in Hawaii is a district issue. As a science teacher who moved from the mainland without family or friends to begin my first year as a teacher in a culturally different area, I am an example of what can help to retain teachers: mentorship. As a first year teacher, my mentor was another science teacher at my school. She got paid to be a mentor and I received professional development credit. Not only did we both benefit by collaborating and sharing strategies, but I gained confidence as a teacher, which lead to student success.
