Allegan Area ESA is leading our county districts toward a student-centered literacy model for reading and writing instruction. Michigan teachers have written a CCSS aligned model for reading and writing instruction (MAISA Units of Study, K-12) using the workshop model. This is the beginning of great instruction, but teachers need a model of what this instruction looks like in a real classroom. I would like to develop a group of literacy leaders to facilitate a Lab Classroom experience, where teachers can visit peer classrooms across the county to learn through a peer observation protocol. By developing this first cohort of literacy leaders and training them though experiencing a Lab Classroom this group can be the grassroots of a movement across the county that will radically change the way we teach and students and teachers learn.
