We are a group of Teach Plus Teaching Policy Fellows who represent a range of schools, school districts, grades, and content areas across Massachusetts. Teach Plus is a nonprofit program devoted to increasing teacher voice in matters of state and federal education policy, and Teach Plus Policy Fellows work on influencing policy while also maintaining their status as teachers of record.
As teachers preparing students for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), next-generation assessments, and college and career readiness, we note a lack of quality professional development regarding the CCSS. We propose the development and expansion of opportunities designed for teachers who want to increase their understanding of the new standards.
We seek to develop a strategic plan for the growth of the Core Collaborative, an already existing teacher-led series of professional development classes created by Teach Plus Fellows that help teachers increase their knowledge of the CCSS in order to plan more rigorous and more standards-aligned instruction for the students in their classes. Such instruction is in turn equipping students for success on next-generation assessments, in postsecondary school, and in modern-day careers.
The Core Collaborative is already proving successful and we fellows believe that its growth and replication in other cities and districts will help close the access gap that teachers are experiencing in their efforts to understand the new standards they must teach.
