Teacher Career Ladder

There is very little to no career ladder for teachers other than entry into administration. Pay increases in many, if not most districts, are still based on an antiquated model of pay increase by years of experience. While experience should certainly be a factor, measuring it by the years that a teacher spends in the classroom is not the most effective manner of doing so.

We need a system where teachers enter the profession... more »

Harnessing Edu-Power! – Creating Teacher Leaders & Creating 21st Century School Spaces

My colleagues and I helped create, develop, and transform our current blended learning school program - Washtenaw Alliance for Virtual Education. In it, teachers have a three-pronged role of instructor, advisor, and chief architects of our program & learning models. In our primary role, we use curricular knowledge & assessment literacy training to collaboratively break down standards into targeted learning benchmarks.... more »

Free Play and Recess Requirements

Numerous studies highlight the importance of free, unstructured play in the healthy development of children. In Finland, students have a 15 minute recess break after every 45 minutes of academic instruction and their students rank at the top academically.
Yet more and more schools in the U.S. have moved away from permitting regular recess for their elementary and middle school students in an attempt to gain more instructional... more »

Teach Like Me

Schools across the country are adversely affected by teacher shortages . In response, I have created the Teach Like Me Campaign.

The Teach Like Me Campaign's main goal is to improve teacher recruitment and retention by redefining public perceptions of the teaching profession. We will accomplish this with three main components:

First, we encourage teachers to speak more positively about our profession. We ask teachers... more »

The Flipped Classroom

In the Flipped Classroom the onus of learning is placed back on students. Teachers are able to spend more of their precious classroom time on intervention, correcting common misconceptions, and individualizing student achievement. Traditional homework is replaced with videos, where the students are introduced to a new topic or concept (led by the teacher), and answer questions embedded within the video. Typically videos... more »

Hybrid Teacher Leadership Role

Hybrid teaching positions retain effective teachers in classroom positions, while providing them leadership opportunities, and keeping them from succumbing to burnout in high-poverty situations. When teachers leaders leave the classroom they sometimes lose the immediate teacher perspective, as well as credibility among teachers who are "in the trenches." Hybrid teachers retain their teacher perspective and can advocate... more »

Teacher Led Professional Development

Our proposal is to lead a movement to transform the way professional development is designed and implemented in education. Education is one of the only fields that relies on outside sources to develop the capacities and competencies of teachers. We spend billions on PD with little impact on outcomes.

Our approach is three-fold: 1) to build capacity among teachers. to this end we just unveiled a web site that can guide... more »

Hybrid Teaching roles

In order to bring some shape to an otherwise flat career trajectory for teachers, districts should begin to replace or augment their district personnel with in-the-classroom teachers. This would bring an authenticity to this work and bring credibility to those who lead PD discussions with teachers.
In my district I have had the opportunity to model this role. I teach high school US History at .4 FTE and then head to... more »

Building Community Partnerships

School and community must come together to provide the best environment for our students. This includes local colleges and businesses. There should be volunteer opportunities for community members to participate in the life of a child. My project would be centered on the formation of a School and Community Partnership board to empower people to participate in the ways they are comfortable--from reading to students, to... more »

Formative Assessment: Teachers Designing the Tool

Research is clear that using medium- (week-by-week) and short-cycle (day-by-day) formative assessments to adapt and differentiate instruction has a significant impact on student achievement (Wiliam and Thompson, 2007; Shepard, 2007). The challenge for the classroom teacher is that consistently collecting, organizing and analyzing this amount of data becomes overwhelming.

As an NBCT with a programming background and... more »

Connecting with the Early Learning Community

We know that many children enter kindergarten already behind. We also know that students who perform at grade level by third grade have a much higher chance of graduating from high school prepared for college, career, and citizenship.

It's time we connect with the early learning community to align our work with children and families as they transition from the PreK to K-12 systems, in order to provide every child with... more »

Teacher Preparation: Ready for Day One

Research and teacher experience has demonstrated that teacher preparation programs are not preparing teachers to be classroom-ready on day one of their teaching career. Research also indicates that the most novice and ineffective teachers are working with the highest... more »
